Everything else in this guide — color, contrast, typography, frame rate, codec — follows from getting the resolution and the pixel pitch right first.

Step 1: Build to exact pixel dimensions
LED walls require content formatted to exact pixel dimensions, because the wall's resolution is the sum of its panels. Pixel pitch is the center-to-center distance between two adjacent LEDs in millimeters; a smaller pitch means more pixels fit into the same area and increases resolution (Christie Digital). The same physical wall carries wildly different pixel counts depending on pitch:
- A 10-foot-wide wall in P1.875 is roughly 1,536 pixels wide.
- The same 10-foot width in P3.91 is roughly 768 pixels wide.
That is a 2x difference in horizontal resolution from pitch alone. A standard 500×500 mm cabinet at P3.91 carries a 128×128 pixel resolution (HITO-LED), so a wall's true canvas is panels-wide × 128 by panels-tall × 128 at that pitch. Step 2: Design in native resolution and aspect ratio
Most LED walls use a custom aspect ratio set by the panel configuration rather than a standard 16:9. A 16×9-foot stage wall, a 32×13-foot corporate backdrop, and a 40×13-foot outdoor wall are all different shapes. Reaching native 4K on a fine-pitch wall takes real estate: a P2.5 wall packs roughly 160,000 pixels per square meter, and a native-4K image needs about a 9.6 × 5.44 m wall (IAMLEDWALL). Design at the wall's exact native resolution, never scale up from a smaller master, and run a test pass at native resolution before event day.
Step 3: Tame color and contrast
LED walls emit light directly and hit brightness levels a desktop monitor cannot, so colors that look balanced on a laptop can blow out on the wall. Indoor LED displays usually require 800–1,200 nits (UNIT LED), while outdoor billboards generally run between 5,000 and 10,000 nits (DOIT VISION) — our hardware spans the 800–5,000 nit range. Practical rules: pull saturation back slightly so reds and greens don't clip, favor high-contrast elements over subtle low-contrast gradients (which band on LED), and confirm on the actual panels during load-in rather than trusting a monitor preview.
Step 4: Size type to pixel pitch and viewing distance
Legibility on an LED wall is a function of pixel pitch and how far the audience stands. A common industry rule of thumb is the 10x Rule: minimum comfortable viewing distance in feet ≈ pixel pitch (mm) × 10 (AVGear) — a P2.5 panel reads cleanly from about 8–10 feet, a P4 from 13–15 feet. Christie's complementary rule of thumb: allow roughly one meter of minimum viewing distance per millimeter of pixel pitch. For type that means:
- P1.875: minimum font sizes start around 24 px.
- P3.91: push minimums to around 48 px.
- Use bold, sans-serif faces — thin weights and serifs lose their fine strokes to the pixel grid.
- Avoid small body copy that turns to mush at audience distance; if it must be small, the wall pitch is too coarse for it.
Step 5: Match motion to refresh rate, and deliver the right codec
Match content frame rate to the playback chain (commonly 30 or 60 fps) and keep loops seamless. Refresh rate is separate from frame rate and matters most on camera: 3840Hz is the de facto standard for keeping LED walls flicker-free on broadcast cameras and smartphones, with high-frame-rate shoots pushing to 7680Hz (VisionLedPro). The human eye stops noticing flicker well below that, but cameras are far more flicker-sensitive, which is why filming and live broadcast call for 3840Hz or more (Unilight) — essential if your event is being filmed or streamed. For delivery, professional playback systems support ProRes, H.264, and uncompressed video; ProRes 422 offers the best quality-to-file-size balance for most event content.
