Choose P1.875 when the audience or a camera sits close to the wall, and P3.91 when viewers stand well back or the screen is large or outdoors. Pixel pitch is the distance in millimeters between the centers of two adjacent LEDs, and that single number drives resolution, comfortable viewing distance, and cost. A P1.875 panel packs LEDs roughly twice as densely in each direction as a P3.91 panel, which is why it reads sharp up close — and why it rents for more. This guide compares the two pitches the way we scope real builds at our Brooklyn Navy Yard studio, so you can match the spec to the room instead of overbuying resolution nobody will see.

What pixel pitch actually means

Pixel pitch is the center-to-center spacing between adjacent LED pixels, measured in millimeters; smaller pitch means higher resolution and a closer comfortable viewing distance, according to Christie Digital's pixel-pitch primer. So P1.875 (1.875 mm spacing) resolves finer detail than P3.91 (3.91 mm spacing). Because pixels are arranged in a grid, halving the pitch roughly doubles the resolution along each axis and quadruples the pixel count per square meter — not a flat "4x sharper," but about four times as many pixels in the same area.

Two field rules translate that into a viewing distance you can plan around. Christie's rule of thumb is to allow roughly one meter of minimum viewing distance for each millimeter of pixel pitch — about 1.9 m for P1.875 and 3.9 m for P3.91. The AV-industry "10x Rule" expresses the same idea in feet: minimum comfortable distance ≈ pixel pitch × 10, per AVGear's pixel-pitch guide — so roughly 19 ft for P1.875 versus 39 ft for P3.91 before the grid disappears. Stand closer than that and you start to see individual pixels.

Brightness: match the light, not the hype

Brightness is set by the environment, not the pitch — the two specs are independent. Indoor LED video walls typically run around 600–1,200 nits, which is plenty for ballrooms, conference rooms, and retail, according to UNIT LED's indoor screen guide. Outdoor walls are a different animal: outdoor LED billboards generally require 5,000–10,000 nits to stay readable, climbing toward the top of that range in direct sun, per DOIT VISION. Refresh rate: the spec that matters for cameras

If a camera will ever point at the wall — broadcast, livestream, or a phone in the crowd — refresh rate matters more than people expect. The human eye stops noticing flicker well before a camera does, which is why on-camera LED is spec'd at much higher refresh rates than displays meant for the naked eye, per Unilight LED. For broadcast with 50/60 fps cameras, 3,840 Hz is the industry-accepted baseline for keeping LED walls flicker-free, with high-speed camera work pushing to 7,680 Hz, according to DOIT VISION's refresh-rate guide. Fine-pitch P1.875 panels are commonly the ones spec'd for on-camera work — but always confirm the refresh rate, not just the pitch, when you're shooting.

Cost: where the money goes

Fine pitch costs more because it crams more LEDs into the same area. As a rough planning figure, fine pitch (e.g. P1.9) can run roughly 30–50% more than coarser pitch for the same wall size, per our own pricing. The bigger driver is square footage — price is billed per panel, so a larger wall costs more regardless of pitch — and outdoor adds roughly 20–50% for weatherproofing. When to choose each

  • Choose P1.875 for corporate stages, keynote IMAG, product launches, broadcast and virtual-production sets, lobby and retail walls — anywhere the audience is within ~20 ft, cameras are rolling, or you're showing dense text and logos.
  • Choose P3.91 for concerts, festivals, arena scoreboards, trade-show headers, and most outdoor walls — large formats where viewers stand back and the per-panel savings let you build bigger.
  • Not sure? Measure the closest viewer's distance in feet and divide by 10 — that's the coarsest pitch you can use before pixels show. A 25-ft minimum distance comfortably allows P2.5; a 40-ft crowd is fine on P3.91.

Frequently asked questions

Is P1.875 always sharper than P3.91?

At close range, yes — P1.875 has about four times the pixel density per square meter. But past roughly 39 ft (the P3.91 comfort distance from the 10x Rule), the eye can't resolve the extra detail, so the two look identical to a back-row viewer. Resolution you can't see is money spent for nothing.

Can P3.91 be used indoors?

Absolutely — it's a workhorse for large indoor stages, concerts, and trade-show walls where the audience stands well back. P3.91 only looks coarse when people walk right up to the wall, so it's ideal for big-format indoor builds, not breakout-room screens where viewers sit a few feet away.
